Tips For Getting Rid Of Junk In Your Home

Piles of junk lying around the house and overflowing dustbins are not only indoor pollutants but also a strain on your mental well-being. It can be extremely difficult to get rid of all the junk especially when you get used to the sight. Even though the sight of waste and clutter is overbearing, it’s hard to sort out the mess.

One major reason why it’s so hard to get rid of junk is because it has accumulated over the years and some of the things seem indispensable. However useless they are-if you’re a hoarder-parting with pre-loved belongings can be a challenge.

Here are a few useful tips to help you de-clutter your house.

Set A Deadline

You can spend your whole life waiting for that one weekend when you’ll have time to deal with the mess. But the opportunity will never present itself unless you make a conscious effort to make one. Instead of flipping pages on the calendar waiting for the right time, set a deadline. If you’re a procrastinator by nature, force yourself to abide by that deadline if need be.

If you have a tough study routine or a hectic job, divide your time into 2 hours every weekend to de-clutter your room or house. This way you’ll get done with the job easily without pressurizing yourself with all of it at once.

Sort Out The Junk

If you have not felt the need to look into the junk for something you needed in a long time, chances are all of it is useless for you. Assess whether discarding all of it will make any difference in your life in terms of quality, convenience and comfort. If the loss of an old burnt chopper will not make a dent on your kitchen needs or cooking skills, throw it out.

Some people are very passionate about recycling junk and bringing it to good use. If you consider yourself this creative and motivated, then only save all those plastic bottles and cans that you have stored for years. Otherwise, they’ll keep lying there for another decade without helping you with anything. It’s best to assess what you actually need and what you’re just hoarding for the sake of it.

Categorize Your Junk

Once you’ve decided what you want to keep and what you want to give away, the next step is to categorize the giveaway items. You don’t necessarily have to discard all of it at a dumpsite. Things can be given to charity, donated for the homeless, set up for yard sale or disposed off. Make these four categories and get to work.

Separate all items that fall under each category and pack them up neatly so that delivering them to their destination becomes easy. Strictly stick to these categories without hiding anything under the bed for yourself. Don’t second guess your decision.

Set A Date Of Delivery

If all that junk had been lying around the house for that many years, it’s quite possible for the labeled bags/boxes to stay longer. Don’t underestimate your ability to procrastinate. If you’ve sorted out the mess and your house looks cleaner than before, kudos to you! But this definitely doesn’t mean that the job is done. You still have to deliver those packages to their respective places.

Set aside one day for dropping off those boxes to a charity or fundraiser. Arrange a day for putting up the usable stuff for yard sale and use the internet to advertise your yard sale day. The goal is to get rid of the junk as soon as possible.
